Burlesque seems to go hand in hand with body confidence but I find it doesnt always sits well with me. Exposing oneself in a class is very hard to do, let alone removing clothes to literally expose yourself. I love the confidence it can give people but sometimes I think it makes people more insecure. Be mindful when you teach, because for some people those body confidence issues are so much more than merely a hatred for ta physical part of themselves. Often that is just the manifestation they choose to represent it.
Today a student came to see me for a body confidence class. She is a burlesque student of mine who has told me burlesque is something she needs to push herself to accept her body. Straight away I knew she needed to talk about what she felt was holding her back. I cant work with her to go forward, without knowing what needed to be overcome. This lady, lets call her Phoenix has been through hell and then some. What initially started out as her saying she hated her thighs, turned down a path of Phoenix’s childhood to the present day. I have met my share of warrior women who have battled life but this lady really got the tshirt and the loyalty card.
In the two hours of the confidence workshop, this lady stole my heart but more importantly told me I helped. I helped her. She told me she was going to start today seeing herself as the perfect she is. Thank you.Phoenix. You touched my heart, my soul and I am beyond honoured you came to me for the class xxx
